What I read in february 2016

14.03.2016

To be honest I am kind of disappointed with myself, because in February I read only two book. I promised to write a reading update every month so here is what I think about them:

1. Emotional intelligence: Why it can matter more than IQ by Daniel Golemanfour stars

Page number: 448

Publication date: 1995

Translated in Bulgarian: yes

I've been wanting to read Emotional intelligence by Daniel Goleman for quite some time. Goleman is a psychologist and a journalist, he's been twice a Pulitzer prize nominee. The emotional intelligence plays an equal part in success as the IQ. The high emotional intelligence is considered a leadership quality. Goleman has another very popular book Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships. According to him the IQ is responsible for only 10% of a person's success in life, the EQ is responsible for another 10%. Goleman claims that the most important ingredients for success are the right upbringing and of course how hard you work for it. Emotional intelligence explores the world of the emotions, how the negative ones affect our health, the traumas, the anxiety disorders. This is a psychology book and it's not a fast read, but it's quite interesting. Emotional intelligence is a worldwide bestseller and I'll definitely read more books by Goleman.

2. An ember in the ashes by Sabaa Tahirfour stars

Page number: 464

Publication date: April 2015

Translated in Bulgarian: yes

There's a lot of hype surrounding An ember in the ashes by Sabaa Tahir, there's going to be a movie soon too. The book is a fantasy novel, but the world in it is inspired by ancient Rome. There are two points of view in this book - Laia's and Elias'. If you are a fan of Game of thrones and Lord of the rings you'll enjoy this book. The story is kind of slow in the beginning and I had to force myself to keep reading. Fortunately I'd read a lot of reviews of this book so I didn't give up. I ended up liking it although I am not a big fan of this genre. The story line is quite complicated and I decided not to summarize it for you. I really liked the characters. The only thing that was very annoying to me was the fact that there are two love triangles in this story. I really can't stand love triangles, they really bug me! The world described in the book is quite brutal - it's prototype is ancient Rome after all. There will be a second book in this series, it's coming out this summer.
